Departing after Christmas celebrations straight into the heavy winter conditions, Nanga Parbat, the last great mountain in the Himalaya, boasts the highest face in the world. A favourable summit bid, in pure alpine, light, fast style, will be dependant on a minimal weather window between end of January and March 2012. The North Face® three-man expedition team hailing from three continents - Simone Moro (ITA), Denis Urubko (KAZ) and Cory Richards (USA) – are famous for the first winter ascent of 8,025m Gasherbrum II (GII) in Karakoram, Pakistan, in February 2011.

Leader of the expedition is renowned Italian alpinist and The North Face® athlete, Simone Moro, who, with over 40 expedition achievements to his name, including eleven in winter, has paved the alpine history books with the first winter ascents of Cerro Mirador (1993); Marble Wall (2001); 8000m Shisha Pangma (2005); and, the historic summit of the 8,481m Nepali peak, Makalu (2009); and 8,025m Gasherbrum II (2011).

Accompanying Moro is decade-long climbing partner and mountaineering stalwart, Kazakh Denis Urubko. Urubko, who partnered Moro in Gasherbrum II, Makalu, Shisha Pangma and Marble Wall, has summited each of the world’s fourteen 8000m peaks without oxygen, including opening new routes. Experienced by GII, American climber and outdoor photographer, Cory Richards, will not only climb alongside Moro and Urubko, but aims to capture the expedition’s key moments digitally.

Located in the Gilgit-Baltistan province of Pakistan, Nanga Parbat is the 9th highest mountain in the world and the second highest peak in Pakistan. First climbed by an Austrian alpinist, Hermann Buhl on July 3rd 1953, Buhl also is also the only man ever to climb an 8,000m solo. Nanga Parbat is also known as ‘Killer Mountain’ being one of the most deadly 8000ers, having claimed many lives between 1930-1953 and in recent decades. It is considered one of the most seriously difficult to climb and has been the most attempted 8,000mer peak in winter since 1990.
