This year, the OutDoor INDUSTRY AWARD competition was held by Messe Friedrichshafen for the third time during OutDoor 2008 (July 17 to 20). A total of 280 entries from 25 different countries were submitted to this year's innovation award, originally developed and organized by iF International Forum Design.
The OutDoor INDUSTRY AWARD "seal of approval" gives consumers orientation on the market in the sports and leisure sector. They have an opportunity to see what is innovative and functional as well as environment friendly and sustainable.
An international jury of experts presented a total of 27 awards for exceptional performance in the field of design and innovation. All of the award-winning products were on display in an exhibition during the show on the ground floor of Foyer West
The jury of experts made up of Boris Gnielka (Outdoor-Magazin, Motor Presse Stuttgart, Stuttgart/D), Mark Held (European Outdoor Group, Zug/CH), Alan Hinkes (Abenteurer, North Yorkshire/GB), Stephan Dietrich (adidas AG, Herzogenaurach/D), David Durkan (Snow & Ski magazine, Sandivka/ NO) and Lars Kirchner (Basislager Sportartikel GmbH, Erfurt/D), discussed each of the entries based on the evaluation criteria they were provided with.
The jury's evaluation criteria included: Degree of innovation, Design quality, Workmanship, Choice of materials, Environmental friendliness, Sustainability, Functionality, Utility, Safety, Trendsetting character, Brand value/Branding.
The categories in which the products were evaluated were: Apparel, Shoes, Back packs/Travel luggage, Mountain-climbing equipment, Camping equipment, Sleeping bags, Water sports, Accessories, Concepts.
SILVER AWARD "Steel Blade": Snow shovel Manufacturer/Design: Grivel Mont Blanc, Courmayeur/Italy. grivel, the only Italian company to receive an Award, received the Silver Award for its Steel Blade, the super-light snow shovel (406 grams) which does not require any type of assembly. It is multifunctional and can also be used in cramped spaces. The shovel can be easily elongated with the help of an ice pick. Its steel edge is able to cut the sharpest ice edges.
Jury's opinion: "This product is really innovative. The shovel has been reinvented: small, light and multifunctional. Basic equipment for ski tours and glacier climbs. And if it gets lost, its signal colour makes it easy to find."
Gioachino Gobbi, the owner of Grivel Mont Blanc commented the prize as follows: We are particularly proud to have received this award, firstly because it provides international recognition as we participated against all other outdoor companies worldwide and secondly becase the award recognises our efforts to render all our products innovative, easy to use and safe for the end-user. Probably Mont Blanc, which we see from our windows every day, inspired us once again."
