Petzl Nao headlamp with Reactive Lighting technology
Petzl, leader in hands-free lighting, is proud to introduce the NAO with REACTIVE LIGHTING technology, the first headlamp that automatically adjusts brightness and beam pattern to meet users’ lighting needs. REACTIVE LIGHTING technology marks a significant leap forward in hands-free lighting, allowing users to focus on the activity at hand, as their headlamp adjusts seamlessly, instantly and imperceptibly.

Beyond Power… Intelligence.
REACTIVE LIGHTING technology means the NAO will always provide the right amount of light, reducing the need for manual adjustments and allowing users to focus on the activityat hand. As the NAO won’t output too much or too little light, the headlamp uses the energy stored in its rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery as efficiently as possible, for increased burn times. With REACTIVE LIGHTING, Petzl changes the world of hands-free lighting. It’s no longer just about power, it’s about using power intelligently.

How it Works
REACTIVE LIGHTING Technology uses an integrated light sensor to detect incoming light. Then a microprocessor analyzes that information and, based on user-defined settings, decides whether to increase or decrease power to the NAO’s two high-output LEDs. As a result, the NAO will provide the right amount and type of light, from 7 to 355 lumens, wide or spot beam.

Whether reading a map 15-20 inches away or searching for a cairn more than 300 feet away, the NAO will always shine just the right amount of light. A wide, diffuse beam illuminates nearby objects. As the distance increases, the light gets stronger and the spot LED kicks in, providing a focused beam that shines up to 300 feet. All this is done automatically, as quickly as the user moves her head.

“With its ability to automatically adjust brightness levels, the NAO gives me a whole new night running experience and allows me to improve my night trail performance. The innovative technology provides the correct amount of light and is easy to use. I experience less eye fatigue and it allows me to be more reactive during technical sections of trail at night.”
Seb Chaigneau, ultramarathon trail runner and third place finisher in the 2011 Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc

Who It’s For
The NAO is perfect for trail running, hiking, climbing or skiing at night, and any activity where the user needs to move quickly hands free. With no need to stop and fiddle with lighting settings or levels, wearers can seamlessly light their way on the move. Just turn the NAO on and go – it does the rest. Endurance athletes will appreciate the NAO’s extended burn times, as a single charge can last an entire night.

The NAO comes pre-programmed with two standard multi-activity REACTIVE LIGHTING levels, and light output and burn times have been pre-selected to work for most activities. To get the most out of the NAO, users can download the free OS by Petzl software to customize and fine-tune the optimal brightness, burn times and beam-length for specific activities and lighting needs. Users can easily switch between profiles and modes on the fly, anywhere, at any time.

The NAO will be available in outdoor specialty stores in July 2012. Look for it as early as Spring 2012, at ultra marathons and on trails near you.
