C.A.M.P. (Construction Articles for Mountaineering in Premana) was formed in 1889 high in the mountains of Premana, Italy. Its founder, Nicola Codega the grandfather of the current owners, was a blacksmith producing a wide range of products from wrought iron, including various cutting implements. The culture of iron and its workings had taken root in Premana during the 1800s and the iron mines in the valley were heavily exploited.
Alpine and mountaineering equipment did not begin to develop for a further 30 years when the founders son, Antonio Codega, began producing new items for alpine use: the ice axe. The inspiration to develop these new tools came from a former official of the Italian Army Alpine Troops who, upon returning from the First World War, stressed that soldiers were in need of equipment that would enable them to move more efficiently over difficult and icy terrain. It was 1920, and the early development of mountaineering equipment had begun. By 1940 the company had grown to a workforce of twenty employees.
Following the Second World War one of the most prolific mountaineers of the period began visiting Premana, his name was Riccardo Cassin. It was this charismatic figure with a huge passion for mountaineering that helped Antonio Codegas four sons develop and nurture Camps continued production of mountaineering equipment. Over the following 50 years C.A.M.P. went on to develop not only ice axes but also new items such as crampons, hammers, pitons and nuts. The C.A.M.P. range grew from strength to strength and its natural expansion stretched beyond Italy and Europe and was now on an international level.
With the addition of products such as helmets, harnesses, gaiters, rucksacks and sleeping bags C.A.M.P. have further complemented their existing range, whilst also broadening the appeal to a larger spectrum of outdoor users and enthusiasts.
At the beginning of the years 2000, C.A.M.P. continues to work for the one who is challenging himself and the nature, who is actively living in the outdoors, for the one who is "young inside", who loves the risk and the spirit of adventure, who stops at the colours of sunrise and at the enchantment of sunset, for the one who loves profoundly the nature and has an innative yearning to explore. |
